Fat Bubble: Kimmy Garris
Hi friends, welcome to the Fat Bubble, where every week we celebrate and uplift fat culture, fat community and fat futures. Every week I'm so grateful to have this opportunity to be in solidarity with you all, in this little corner of the internet where we honour our shared liberation.
This week, I've been enjoying the sunshine. I've needed it. I've wanted to walk around in the forest, feeling the sun on my skin. I've laid in the garden between clients, grateful to work from my little studio in my garden and be able to nip out and feel the grass between my toes. Nature has been the most powerful ally of all in the last nine months, being both inspiration and comfort, nourishment and sanctuary.
My worldview is skewed to Palestine, and my newsfeeds and socials are reflecting my own priorities back to me. Even through that important bubble, anti-fatness and diet culture manages to invade, never mindful of context or appropriateness. The message is clear, are you ready for summer?
Well, if by 'ready' you mean, 'do I have an excellent TBR pile to take on holiday with me?', the answer is yes. Do I have a personal fan, back up personal fan, chub rub shorts and rosewater for sweat rash? Yes, absolutely. Do I have an emotional support water bottle that I love and carry everywhere? I do! Do I have swimwear that is functional, and swimwear that might start a sex riot? I DO!
And do I have plenty of fat folks on my radar that live their lives right now, in the body they have, and do they travel and wear the swimwear and the dresses, and go on the hikes, and rest in the sun with a fun little drink? Absolutely I do, and today I'm sharing one of my favourites - it's Kimmy Garris over at @kimmystyled
.Kimmy's account is principally focused on plus size travel, whilst also making content on fashion and her own joyful body movement practices. I love to see the way she explores both the US and also other countries around the world.
Like all my featured fatties recently, Kimmy has used her platform and content to highlight vital liberation focuses around the world - in Palestine, Congo, Haiti and more, and you can find a highlight on her IG page and videos on their Tiktok. In fact, all their highlights on their IG are great so it may be a nice little focus for a scroll for you!
One of my favourite focuses of theirs has been to watch their recent adventures as an aerialist - not something we get to see from a fat content creature very much! Man, it looks hard! But it also looks super fun and rewarding, and I love to see the adventure take place!
I'm sure you will enjoy their varied and fun content - do go and check out their work on their platforms.
